Studio Philosophy
Emily’s primary goal for each student is that they feel confident and capable when they play their instrument. She is recognized for her patient and warm approach, easily establishing rapport with students of all ages and personalities.
When we learn to play an instrument, we increase our sensitivity and self-awareness. We must think more clearly and pay attention to details. At Leaphart String Studio, priority is placed on increasing students’ awareness of what they are doing and guiding them through an investigative process. With this approach, students acquire a sense of ownership over their growth and become adept at seeking solutions on their own.
Learning how to play an instrument also gives us a new way to express ourselves. Studying our instrument in a warm, encouraging environment makes us confident in that expression. Emily values the unique personalities and ability levels of every student. She helps each young musician cultivate their own style and sound that they can be proud of.
Approach
New students begin by acquiring a strong technical skillset, allowing the violinist or violist to feel as natural on their instrument as possible. Leaphart String Studio uses the Suzuki Method as a pedagogical foundation. Students learn the Suzuki repertoire, supplemented by other pieces of music that are chosen specifically for each student.
A focus on repertoire and excellent technique is balanced by creative exercises, encouraging the student to make their own musical decisions and find their unique voice. Emily pairs her extensive Suzuki Method studies with Creative Ability Development (CAD) training for a uniquely well-rounded approach to musicianship. Over time, students build aural skills, learn note-reading, and are comfortable improvising on their instruments as well.
Many parents decide they would like to learn to play the violin or viola alongside their student. Emily offers extended sessions, allowing the parent to have individual instruction back-to-back with their child’s lesson.
